Description

The purpose of the parachute harness in a model rocket, or "shock cord" is to withstand the shock of the opening of the parachute, which can reach considerable values especially in large rockets, and to keep the rocket parts together after separation.

Tubular Kevlar is a perfect material to make entire shock cords, or even just the part that remains inside the fuselage that is most subject to the flame of the ejection charge. Kevlar is one of the strongest materials that exist, six times stronger than steel but much lighter, and is also used for the manufacture of bulletproof vests and helmets. It is also completely fireproof and extremely difficult to cut. These characteristics make it perfect for the creation of an element such as the shock cord that must be able to resist tensile stress, cutting and flame.

This tubular Kevlar is woven into a flattened ribbon 12 mm wide and has a static resistance of 2400 kg!
For this reason it is suitable for the largest and most powerful rockets, with large parachutes, while it is perhaps excessive for rocket models with a diameter of less than 75 mm.

The width of this tubular Kevlar distributes the stress over a larger area, with less likelihood of it cutting the rocket tube causing the tear known as "zipper".
