Medium-sized two-stage scale replica for Estes, Klima and TSP motors.
The real Hydra Sandhawk is a particular version of a well-known American sounding rocket, the Sandia-Sandhawk, which is launched from a submerged platform.
If you want to make a good-sized two-stage model, and you like building, with this kit you can make a faithful reproduction that works perfectly. You won't be able to submerge it underwater, but we guarantee that the flight will be exciting.
The Hydra Sandhawk uses 24 mm motors in the booster: you can use D12-0, D20-0 or E12-0 TSP, or D12-0 Estes.
In the second stage you can use many 18 mm type B and C Estes or Klima motors, and even D9 Klima. Imagine how high this model can reach with an E12-0 booster and a second stage with D9!
In the two-stage version the ignition of the upper stage is controlled by the first stage motor, with the usual simple technique of non-composite motors. Therefore it is a suitable model for those who have never built two-stages before or for those who have only built small and simple ones, and now want a model with more "weight"!
As with all Rocketarium models, the instructions (in English) are detailed and well made, and the material is of excellent quality. The tubes are identical to the Estes tubes and the centering disks are made of light and sturdy wood, such as basswood (not balsa), laser cut as well as the fins.
Parachute cord
For the connection to the parachute this kit uses a rubber band like the Estes kits.
Since the rubber band is a material that wears out quite quickly, we recommend adding a kevlar cord as the first part of the shock-cord, and connecting the rubber band at the end of it so that you can easily replace it when necessary.
The recovery is done via a plastic parachute, included in the kit.
Parachute protection
To protect the parachute you will not need protective wadding or protective sheets: a system for diverting the expulsion gases ("baffle") is already included in this model, a very efficient way to avoid burns to the parachute.
Features:
Launch requires a launch pad that can accommodate a 5mm rod, such as the Estes Porta Pad “E” (rod purchased separately), or the Aerotech Mantis, and a standard electric launch controller, such as the Estes Astron II Launch Controller, Estes Electron Beam or the Klima Launch Controller.
